Live Music Photography
I've loved live music all of my life. Going to concerts and seeing a performance unfold is an intense, unpredictable experience. Every performance is unique and you never know what could happen.
Around 2014 I decided to try my hand at shooting live music. I started by emailing a few local bands that I liked and went and shot as much as I could. I shot lots of great local talent including The Hounds of Jezebel, Dimitris Rail, The Hunger, Ordinary Elephant, 333, Twelve Years Driven, Hello Planet and many more. I made a lot of great friends and made some good connections. Special shout out to Raf Rivera and AJ Santana for being such righteous humans and making me feel welcome in their world.
During this time I was able to shoot a few bands that were more widely known as well, including 10,000 Maniacs, Puddle of Mudd and The English Beat. Some of these I got access because a local band was opening, some I just emailed the artist or venue and asked if I could shoot. Never hurts to ask 😉
The Local Scene
Houston has a bustling and diverse music scene. I'm sure it's proximity to Austin doesn't hurt. There is a wide variety of very talented musicians from all genres to enjoy. One of the first bands I shot here was Ordinary Elephant. A wife and husband folk duo that has got an incredible sound. I met them through friends, and shot a few shows as well as my first "band portraits" with them. Please go check them out if you like folk.

LiveNation and Torched
In 2014 a close friend put me in contact with a connection at LiveNation here in Houston. I started shooting shows at House of Blues a few weeks later as the "House photographer". It was exciting and challenging shooting "bigger acts". Unlike the local shows, larger acts/venues only allow photographers to shoot the first 3 songs. Basically you have 9-15 minutes to capture as much as you can. Not to mention that you're often positioned much further away than the smaller venues.
I also worked with Torched Magazine to do a few shoots and write-ups. Judy Lyon Torched Magazine's founder and all around awesome human, got me assignments shooting Bauhaus, X and The Violent Femmes, among others.
